Easy ways to unlock a door without a key

Our locksmith technician installing a brand new door in a residential building in Miami FL

If you’ve lost or misplaced your door key, there are always ways to get back inside. This is a job probably best left for the experts but in case you want to try your hard at ‘breaking in’ to your own home, here are some quick tips.

Bouncing the lock

Hint: before trying this method out, it’s worth having an idea about the internal anatomy of a lock, so check out one of our other blog posts entitled “Easy ways to replace your lock tumblers” for more information about just what’s going on inside your lock!

Bouncing the lock is a tried and tested method used by all locksmiths and while it takes some skill, it’s something you can try yourself. You’ll first need a bump key. If for some strange reason you don’t have one lying around, any locksmith should be able to help you out. Once it is inserted into the lock, use a screwdriver or hammer to gently bump on the back of the key. Start gently and gradually add pressure as you feel the bump key sliding into the lock and aligning the internal pins.

Drilling it out

Obviously, this is more drastic and if you’ve reached this point it really is time to call a professional locksmith. If however you’re reading this because no locksmith is available beware that while it will open the door within minute, it will cause extensive damage to the lock and door. Also remember that Quickly Locksmith offer a 24/7 call out service and can usually arrive within 15-minutes to avoid you having to resort to this drastic measure!

Some locks are easier to drill out than others and some incorporate anti-drill pins that are made of strong metal and that make this method ineffective. In general, what you’ll need is a hole punch (to open up the keyhole large enough for the drill bit to enter), a powered drill and a replacement lock to replace what will be a useless hole when you’re finished.

Use the hole punch to open up a hole towards the top of the keyhole. Once big enough for the drill bit to fit, drill a hole through the lock cylinder. This will destroy the internal pins and allow you to force the lock open. As you pass through the lock, you should feel some resistance as the drill bit meets each of the individual pins (most locks have 5 or 6 pins). If at any point the drill starts to bind or bog down, you’ll need to put the drill into reverse and pull it out slightly.

Other methods

Other ‘tricks’ that you have probably seen in movies such as sliding a credit card along the door jamb or picking it with a paper clip or hair pin and mostly fictional with modern locks. Even basic modern locks are much more resilient and not easily opened, even with experience.

If you’d rather not attempt this yourself and want a professional, Quickly Locksmith in Miami are available 24/7.

How to 'break-in' your own home when losing/misplacing your keys?

Oh no, you left your home and just realized the keys are still inside- damn it!

We all do it… not on purpose, but hey it happens… Now’s not the time to get med and call yourself a bunch of names, you’d never let someone else say those nasty things to you right? So stop saying it in your head!

And the most important thing to remember right about now is- don’t take your frustration out on your lock- it’s not its fault, and it’s not going to respond well to anger and attempts to force it open (any other day you’d thank it for being so strong and resilient, probably not today..).

DIY tips that will help you get back inside:

when you forget / misplace your keys, or… when your door is automatically locked and you realize you forgot your keys inside- one second too late you can call a locksmith services to help out or try:

  • Call a neighbor / friend / anyone that might have a spare key
  • Check for open windows / back doors / basement door
  • Use a plastic card to open an unlocked door: insert it slightly and look for the lock mechanism inside. Once you find it start gently shaking the handle and the plastic card will slowly open your lock
  • If you have a screwdriver available you can remove your door knob and then use the screwdriver to simply unlock it

In case you try a bunch of stuff and nothing works- stop there! You don’t want to cause any damages to your door, or further damages to your knob / lock.

Antique Lock Repair: How to make old locks new again

Locks & Keys - Quickly locksmith Miami

Repairing antique locks is a task that requires a certain amount of skill and is best suited to experienced locksmiths. While technology has certainly moved forward throughout the years, antique locks, if maintained well, continue to be strong and effective.

Appearance vs functionality

While antique locks may look more ornate and aesthetically attractive than plain modern locks, they are often something that thieves take notice of. Impressive looks and decorative designs sometimes go hand-in-hand with questionable security, especially if they haven’t been well maintained.

Good as new

If the lock is known to be secure and functioning well, improving the outward appearance is an easy DIY fix. Head down to your local locksmith with either lock or a photo in hand and they should be able to offer a polish or paint that can offer a new lease of life to tired locks.

old locks

Rust

If on the other hand the lock doesn’t look so bad on the outside but its not working well internally, rust could be the problem. Gently remove the lock and soak it in vinegar for a few hours to help dissolve any internal rust. If you are dismantling anything, make sure you know how it goes back together first. Once soaked, rinse it off and clean with a good quality degreasing and lubricating spray then allow to dry fully.

Shaky?

If you feel the lock isn’t solid and/or rattles inside when using, something is probably amiss. Taking a look inside might show something obvious, but again, before dismantling, take a photo to make sure you know how to put it all back together. Failing that, take it down to your local locksmith and they will offer expert advice on whether its something that can be salvaged or would best be replaced!

Door lock problems that should not be ignored

Door lock problems that should not be ignored

Our locksmith technician installing a brand new door in a residential building in Miami FL

Your front door lock is likely the most used in the entire house. It is also probably the most important so it stands to reason that it requires the most attention to ensure its working properly. Even expensive, high quality locks require regular maintenance and their original cost or perceived strength shouldn’t fool you into thinking they are ‘install and forget’ items. Any locksmith can repair or replace a broken lock, but why let it get to that point? There are steps you can take yourself to ensure they work well for as long as possible!

Knobs, handles and doors

A lock is just one part of the complete assembly that keeps you and your family safe. Doorknobs, handles and the door itself work in conjunction with the lock and if one part loosens, the rest often follow.

Check each item individually to make sure they are solid and working smoothly. Exterior locks are exposed to the elements – in some climates they’re subject to freezing winters and sweltering summers. Look for signs of rust and any other hazard such as dirt or mold. Tighten any lose bolts and switch out any easily replaceable part that looks worn as these are the first things burglars look for.

When you move into a new home or have just experienced a break-in, now is a good time to check things over properly. Quickly Locksmith, the leading locksmith in Miami, are able to offer professional services to suit these situations and provide expert advice and/or repairs where necessary.

Broken key

Before you call out a professional to help with a key that has snapped off in the lock, there are steps you can take yourself. Remove as many pieces of the key as possible. If you can get the whole key out, there is probably nothing else to worry about – new keys can be copied easily and cheaply. However, it is important to check the lock is fully working as it is possible that it could have been the lock that lead to the broken key. Using a different key, check to see that it inserts and retracts freely. Any obstruction could signal a problem and you should have an expert check it out.

How to change combination locks?

Our locksmith technician unlocks a stuck & locked old safe at a commercial clients business in Miami FL

Any locksmith in Miami would tell you first hand- you must know combination locks inside out- they’re practically anywhere! You can find combination locks installed on many devices such as safes, padlocks (bikes locks etc.), door locks, briefcase locks and they also stand on their own, securing bags, lockers, tents and much more. Here are some excellent locksmith solutions that will assist you with changing combination locks in all their versatile forms.

First thing’s first!

First tip, and it might sound a ted obvious but we’ll say it anyway, when changing a combination locks is to make sure specifically which lock you’re dealing with, and what type of device it is installed upon. Most locksmith solutions require a delicate form of work that synthesis between strength and patience in order to achieve accurate, solid results with minimum (to none) damages around. Therefore any locksmith solutions you might try to DIY would require different instructions- but here are some general guidelines that would (hopefully) be useful.

  • Patience is key! Figure out first what tools you might need to change a particular combination lock and keep them close by.
  • Locate your locks’ specific manufactures instructions on their website.
  • First open the locks and only then start working on changing the combination.
  • Any mistake you make along the way can be fixed, as long as the lock remains open and nothing’s broken.
  • Don’t re-lock the device at any point, unless you’re all done.

Diagnose your vehicle remote quickly & effectively

Car locksmith technician on work, trans-coding a new set of keys for a client in Miami FL

As manufacturers continue to innovate and improve technology in modern automobiles, one area that has received a fair amount of attention over the years are the keys themselves. No longer are they just a simple key to insert into a barrel near the steering rack, they control a whole host of features on the car; most notably they lock/unlock the car and arm/disarm the alarm but the windows, lights and of course the engine itself can all be controlled from the key fob. Many locksmiths are able to diagnose problems and provide help when things go wrong and some even provide emergency call out services.

Before calling someone out to look at your car though, take a look through these common problems and their solutions.

Batteries

Car key fobs in themselves are fairly simple devices that rely on radio transmissions to the car in order to perform the range of features we all rely on. They employ a small coin battery that while lasts a decent amount of time, will need to be changed periodically. More modern cars give the driver an alert on the dashboard when this battery is low, but if that hasn’t happened and your remote isn’t working, changing out the battery is always a good first step. They very often cost less than a $ so it could be a very cheap fix!

Spare key

If you’re unlucky enough to be reading this on your phone at the side of the road in the dark and rain, apologies. This one won’t help. However, if you have access to the spare key and the last step didn’t help, try the other key fob. It could be that one has broken somehow. If this is the case, Quickly Locksmith offers a service to replace a key.

Failing that

If neither of the key fobs work and you’ve tried new batteries in both, the problem must lie elsewhere and you’ll need a mechanic or technician to look at the alarm system or signal receiver of the car itself.

How To Calculate The ROI On Your Security

how-to-calculate-the-roi-on-your-security

How to calculate the ROI on your security

how-to-calculate-the-roi-on-your-security

Every decision you make regarding the security budget of your business will ultimately play a crucial factor when its time to count your earnings and build a new yearly budget. Unfortunately, working out what is a justifiable amount isn’t as easy as using the often-mentioned method of return/benefit – investment/cost = ROI.

Below are a number of alternatives that might help you to calculate any security solutions as part of your overall budget.

ALE – annualized loss expectancy

Locks on doors, windows and other entryways into your property serve as the base level of security for some 90% of all businesses. They’re the last line of defense. They are, however, often not enough in the modern world for larger scale businesses and more advanced security systems are finding their way into buildings more often as time goes by. Of course, monthly or yearly costs will increase with monitored security systems so their value needs to be considered in terms of expected loss.

As it’s impossible to apply the normal paradigm of gain vs. cost when considering a security solution for your business, considering the expected loss in the event of a security breach may help provide an easier to understand viewpoint.

Consider the types and frequency of various security risks that tend to occur in your area i.e. burglaries, thefts, in-house security hazards etc. If they are common then it is fair to consider that the perceived risk is higher and advanced security is likely to pay dividend in prevention. To a similar effect, if the frequency is lower but the actual loss associated with these risks is likely to be high, then investing in security could again save you money.

Predicting loss due to security breaches

A reliable and certified professional locksmith that is familiar with the local area will be most able to perform a security audit for your business. The results will give you details of everything important you should consider when performing an analysis of your security needs. Once you have come to a conclusion with regards to your expected annual loss due to theft or other security breaches, you are in a much more informed position to decide on the level of spending on security.

The Important Role Of Digital Security

The important role of digital security

Digital security has experienced an unprecedented boom over the past decade and it is now possible to see personalized security systems in many locations where they would previously have not been possible or too costly to consider. This is with obvious reason too and as prices continue to fall, they become more accessible allowing businesses to better manage access of multiple people. One thing is clear – digital door and locks are the future. They might not replace locks as we know them entirely, but they certainly add an additional layer of security and flexibility.

So much information!

Know how many visitors access your property on a daily and weekly basis. You can track how many of your employees have access to which offices in your business and adjust who can access what, on the fly.

Like many digital solutions, digital doors and locks are easy to install and manage and immediately give access to a wealth of information at the tap of a button. The protection and flexibility they offer are truly mind boggling – how about receiving an email at the end of each business day telling you exactly which of your employees showed up for work? Or telling you who accessed a particularly important or sensitive office? The limits are endless and you’ll finally be in complete control of everything that’s going on!

Different types of digital locks and doors

While a good security guard is always an asset and their vigilance and addition to security shouldn’t be overlooked, a digital lock can offer good levels of security. Using a key fob or card, pre-determined radio frequencies determine who is allowed access. Systems that utilize Bluetooth and work in conjunction with your phone offer more a little more flexibility. However, if the utmost level of security is your concern, biometric systems that identify fingerprints or retina scans offer that extra layer of protection.

Each of these systems will suit different installations and not everyone with require biometric level security. One thing they all offer is security and the power to be informed immediately if a breach occurs.
