Behind the doors of your store lies a number of valuable assets, assets you need to protect to keep your business up and running.
The right storefront door locks make all the difference to the overall security of your space as well as your level of peace of mind.
When choosing the right locks, there are a few different things you want to consider. It’s also highly recommended that you install commercial grade locks.
Commercial grade locks have a stronger rating, which is determined by the Builders Home Manufacturers Association.
There are six factors that are considered during grading, after which, a lock is graded 1, 2, or 3. These factors are operational, strength, security, material, cycles, and finish.
Grade 3 is the lowest level and can be used on doors that don’t protect highly valuable assets. Your breakroom would be an example of this.
Grade 2 locks are a little stronger and are ideal for areas with slightly more traffic.
Grade 1 locks are the strongest type of commercial lock and should be used to secure areas that need additional protection.
Now that you know the importance of commercial grade locks, here are the factors you should consider when selecting locks for your store.
The size of your store is one of the first considerations because it will help you map out how many locks you need and where your high traffic areas are. You should also keep the number of employees and the average number of visitors in mind too.
How many main entry points does your store have? These need to have some of the strongest locks. Deadbolts are a popular choice for main entry points, as are electronic systems, especially if you have a high number of employees who need access to the space. If you have a smaller retail space, deadbolts and commercial grade locks are enough.
Now that you’ve covered all the main entrances, you can look at internal security. How many areas need to be secured? This includes storerooms, offices, and breakrooms among others. High-value inventory should always be placed in the most secure room and should you decide on electronic access, limit access to specific employees.
Master key systems are great for retail spaces, as are high security locks, which are protected from lock picking, bumping, and brute force. Master key systems are convenient because it means you don’t need to have a bunch of keys on your person to access different areas of the store. CCTV cameras are also highly recommended throughout the store.
Store security is never something you should put off. It’s only until your store becomes a victim of theft that you realize how important high quality locks and security systems are.
